Short description

MTMS - Modern Train Management System - is a project of the HTL Mössingerstraße in cooperation with the Austrian Federal Railways, which combines numerous aspects of railroad operations and offers considerable added value for both passengers and the railroad company.

Problem

Currently seat occupancies are only recorded manually at ÖBB. As result of that passengers do not receive any information about already occupied seats or total occupancy of the train before starting their journey. For this reason, long queues are arising and the travellers are already unnerved before starting their trip. Due to the manual counting, the validity of the data is also questionable. The indirect result are small, overcrowded trains on one route and large, empty trains on the other. Another effect is the delay of some lines. All of this is happening due to incorrect planning of the vehicle material.

SOLUTION

While waiting on the platform, passengers should be able to find out where there is a free seat and how high the occupancy rate is in general and in the various parts of the train. That is how a stress-free seat search can be guaranteed. Especially in times of pandemic, an even passenger spread would be an advantage. In return, ÖBB receives very precise data on occupancy and spread. Based on this data, the perfect vehicle material can be provided for each trip. Also transfer times at the train station can be accelerated.

Product

The system should offer economic and ecological added value. The aim is to design and build a so-called mock-up containing 4 seats. This makes it easy to explain the system to non-experts. The data should be available for passengers and railway staff via an app and information monitors on the train. The number of passengers should only be counted with sensors in the individual seats, as well as on the doors and crossings. The system is therefore harmless in terms of data protection, as no personal data is recorded.
